Process

Discover
Burnley FC's app required a refresh following the club's promotion to the Premier League and its new brand identity. Our main objectives were to increase the prominence of the other Burnley FC teams, introduce a digital ticket wallet for match day entry, provide a personalised experience for fans and increase the visibility of hospitality services and the online store.

We drew on our experience with other football clubs and collaborated closely with Burnley FC, involving cross-functional teams to ensure both app and website users were considered throughout the process. A dedicated researcher conducted user interviews, which provided valuable insights into missing features and opportunities to improve the fan experience.
Define
The research findings helped shape our decisions, enabling us to outline a development timeline where the app and website designs could progress in parallel. We identified the need for the home page to be more dynamic, adapting to seasonal content, live games, and all four Burnley FC teams (men’s, women’s, U21s, and U18s). This insight led us to design a flexible home page where content blocks could be moved or hidden, improving the match day experience while promoting merchandise and hospitality.

Market research, benchmarking the app against other Premier League clubs, further validated the need for key features like the Match Centre, Clarets TV, and exclusive club content.
Develop
We adopted a staggered design and development approach, involving developers from the wireframe stage through to the final UI. Early collaboration with the dev teams ensured technical feasibility and alignment with user needs. To validate our designs, we conducted unmoderated prototype testing using Maze, with real Burnley FC fans providing feedback on user flows. Although the tester pool was limited, their insights were invaluable in refining the app.

Key features, like the dynamic home page and Match Centre, were developed in tandem, with iterative testing and feedback loops in place to fine-tune functionality before launch.
Deliver
The project culminated in a successful launch, though the tight deadline—aligned with the start of the football season—added pressure on development and QA. In hindsight, a phased rollout with a soft launch for key features would have allowed for smoother updates. However, the project's demands required the team to adapt to the timeline.

Despite the challenges, the app successfully integrated core features like the Match Centre and the dynamic home page, enhancing fan engagement and commercial opportunities.

UI Screens

Home
The Home page serves as a hub for all app content. It allows users to find anything Burnley-related, from the latest news and videos to match day-specific sections like tickets, hospitality and features products from the Burnley FC online store. Users can explore further without leaving the app.

The Home page dynamically changes based on user status. Signed-in users see a personalised welcome message, their purchased tickets in the ticket wallet, and exclusive content on Clarets+. It also showcases upcoming games for all club teams in a top-of-the-page carousel.
Matches
Match Centre
The Match Centre has three main states: pre-game, live-game, and post-game. It shows relevant information for the game, including real-time stats, commentary or lineups.
Tickets
Clarets+
Clarets+ is Burnley FC's hub for video content and broadcasts, including highlights, press conferences, interviews, and live commentary for games.
More Menu
The More Menu lists the secondary app features.

Latest Content lists all news related to the teams, including match reports and transfer news.

Squads List displays the complete list of players for all four teams. Users can tap on the players card to access profiles that include general info, related videos, news, stats and a link to buy the player’s shirt.

Team Stats shows league stats and team rankings for the first team season.
